Mucin-domain glycoproteins, which have mucin domains characterized by dense regions of O-glycosylation, are involved in many aspects of human health, including cancer proliferation, immune cell signaling, and host-pathogen interactions. Mucin biology is challenging to study due to a lack of proper tools to study mucins – one of our lab’s goals is to expand the toolbox. Using chemical biology, protein engineering and mass spectrometry, my research aims to develop ways to specifically target glycoforms of mucin-domain proteins that are implicated in human diseases. Additionally, I am interested in exploring the role of mucins in diseases in which mucins have not yet been studied.
