More about the panelists!

Megan Blewett, PhD

Megan Blewett is a co-founder at Iris Medicine and at ViraLogic Therapeutics. She incubated and started both companies with Venrock, where she used to be an investor focused on the biotech and pharmaceutical spaces. During her time at Venrock, she served as a board observer at Prothelia and Federation Bio, and she currently serves as a board member and president at Iris Medicine. Prior to Venrock, Megan earned a PhD in chemistry as a Hertz Fellow and NSF Fellow with Ben Cravatt at The Scripps Research Institute. Her PhD work helped form the foundation of the biotech company Vividion. Megan received her undergrad degree in chemistry from Harvard, where she worked for chemistry Nobel Laureate EJ Corey. Megan has been named to Business Insider’s Under 40 in Biotech and to the Forbes 30 under 30 list for Healthcare. In her spare time, she enjoys running, biking, and – more recently – curling.

David Camarillo, PhD

David B. Camarillo is Assistant Professor of Bioengineering, (by courtesy) Mechanical Engineering and Neurosurgery at Stanford University. Dr. Camarillo holds a B.S.E in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University, a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and completed postdoctoral fellowships in Biophysics at the UCSF and Biodesign Innovation at Stanford. Dr. Camarillo worked in the surgical robotics industry at Intuitive Surgical and Hansen Medical, before launching his laboratory at Stanford in 2012. His current research focuses on precision human measurement for multiple clinical and physiological areas including the brain, heart, lungs, and reproductive system. Dr. Camarillo has been awarded the Hellman Fellowship, the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program award, among other honors including multiple best paper awards in brain injury and robotic surgery. His research has been funded by the NIH, NSF, DoD, as well as corporations and private philanthropy. His lab’s research has been featured on NPR, the New York Times, The Washington Post, Science News, ESPN, and TED.com as well as other media outlets aimed at education of the public.

Gabriel Sanchez, PhD

Gabriel Sanchez is the CEO of Enspectra Health, a Stanford spin out currently in residence at Fogarty Innovation in Mountain View CA. Enspectra Health is an emerging digital health company pioneering a new field of virtual biopsies to transform the way clinicians evaluate a broad spectrum of skin conditions without the need for an incision. The technology allows for an instantaneous evaluation of rich, digital pathology images in live skin, potentially enabling earlier and less costly interventions. Gabriel received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from MIT, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. Following his Ph.D., Gabriel served as an instructor in the Stanford Bioengineering department where he developed and taught curriculum for the undergraduate medical device design courses.

Erica Smith, PhD

Erica completed her PhD in neurobiology and a post-doc in neuroimmunology at UC Irvine. She used molecular, cell culture, and animal models to uncover the mechanisms of inflammatory cytokine effects on neuron survival and function. In 2015, she moved to the genetics diagnostics industry by joining Ambry Genetics. She learned variant interpretation, genetic disease curation, and diagnostic test creation in that role. Erica continued her work in genetic diagnostics by moving to Invitae in 2018, taking on more project management responsibilities.
